How to Use your Goals to Discover your Adult Style

When we make the transition from college or grad school to adulting with a real job, we tend to have disjointed wardrobes.  The kind of wardrobe that is half college style and half overly stuffy professional style. And none of it really reflects who you are and where you are right now.

Do you feel completely satisfied with the clothes in your closet?

Through Style by Toyin, I’m on a mission to help professional millennial women build a wardrobe that they actually love!

In this post, I’m going to give you one method for figuring that out.  Today, I’ll be talking about how to use your goals and dreams to help you discover your personal, unique, adult style that you will love!

How to Use your Goals to Discover your Adult Style

Let’s get started.  To do this, we will be using a visualization technique called mental imagery.  You may have heard of athletes using this to boost their strength, confidence, and results.  Psychology research has shown that mental imagery also boosts performance for surgeons, musicians, and business executives.

And I believe that we can use mental imagery to discover a personal style that we love.

Step 1:  Visualize yourself 2 years from now.

What I want you to do first is to visualize where you will be two years from now.  Write down your goals and what you want to have accomplished in the next two years.

  • Where do you want to be in your job or business?
  • What are your health and fitness goals?
  • What are your relationship goals?

Finally, think about how you will look when you do these things.  How will you be dressed?

Step 2:  Think about how you will be dressed in every aspect of your life 2 years from now.

Ask yourself these questions:

  1. What are you wearing to work or in your business in two years?  Is it casual or dressy? Do you look like a bawse? Do you look like a free spirit?
  2. If you had to choose a TV, movie, or book character that is inspiring this look, who would it be?
  3. When you walk into a room, what will people think about you?  Will they say, now she’s got it together?  Will someone tell you they love your shoes or bag?
  4. What kind of impression will you make when you walk into a room?

Step 3:  Practice this visualization every morning before you get dressed for the day.

Everyday, before you go into your closet to choose your outfit, think about future you and what she would wear.

Just thinking about how you want future you to look will affect your outfit choices today!  You’ll begin to gravitate toward outfits that give off the same or similar vibe as your “goal” look.

Step 4:  Develop your current personal style from your goals

I've created a seven step process for finding your personal style and building a wardrobe you love.  Here are the first three steps:

  1. Go through your wardrobe and see which pieces you think future you would wear.

  2. Find inspiration.  Create a board on Pinterest or a collection on Instagram and fill it with the looks that future you would love.  But remember, these looks still fit into your lifestyle now.

  3. Create a wishlist or a shopping list of items to incorporate into your current wardrobe.
